The Center for Democracy and Human Rights

Our Story

The genesis of the Sudan Contemporary Center for Studies and Development (SCCESTUD) finds its roots in a response to the grave injustices perpetrated under Sudan’s apartheid regime. This system inflicted widespread human rights violations, particularly targeting the marginalized populations of the Negro nations. In addition to political, cultural, and social rights deprivation, these communities endured the ravages of wars imposed upon their regions. Against this backdrop, the Center emerged as a beacon of hope, committed to addressing the underdevelopment plaguing Sudanese societies, a consequence of both historical legacies and misguided policies.

The Center’s journey commenced in May 1990 with the inauguration of the “Students’ Peace and Development” program, spearheaded by Sudanese university students. Caravans were organized to the Dar Masalit region, aiming to tackle educational deficiencies, raise awareness, and engage with pressing societal issues. This period saw the seeds of activism sown, laying the foundation for subsequent endeavors.

Over the years, SCCESTUD weathered numerous challenges, navigating through restrictions and adversities imposed by governing authorities. Despite obstacles, the Center persisted, evolving its mission and scope. From the establishment of educational institutes focusing on adult literacy to the inception of technical training programs, each initiative underscored the Center’s unwavering commitment to empowerment and enlightenment.

The Center’s reach extended far beyond Sudan’s borders, engaging in dialogue and advocacy on international platforms. From the corridors of power in Cairo to the halls of academia in Norway, SUCCESTUD championed human rights and democratic values. Notably, the Center’s efforts to shed light on Sudanese refugees’ plight and empower marginalized communities exemplify its dedication to effecting tangible change.

As we embark on the next phase of our journey, the year 2021 marks the commencement of a renewed commitment to enlightenment. With eyes set on 2025, SCCESTUD stands poised to drive meaningful transformation across Africa. From establishing strategic frameworks to fostering grassroots engagement, the Center remains steadfast in its pursuit of a more just and equitable future.

We invite you to join us in this journey of empowerment and progress. Together, we can build a future where every voice is heard, every right upheld, and every individual empowered to thrive. Join us as we write the next chapter in the story of Sudan and Africa’s development.
